It’s nonbinary awareness week!
Nonbinary is a term that many people (including myself) use to describe their gender. However, it’s also an umbrella term for anyone that isn’t 100% a man or 100% a woman! This means that people who are genderqueer, agender, bigender, etc could also use the term nonbinary to describe themselves.
Today I wanted to make a post about some of the identities under the nonbinary umbrella and what they mean! This is in no way an exhaustive list, but I’m going to try to include as many as I can!
I hope y’all enjoy! 💛🤍💜🖤
Genderqueer: this is a term referring to people whose gender doesn’t fit conventional binary distinctions. A lot of people use the terms nonbinary and genderqueer interchangeably. This term is usually used by those who feel their gender can most accurately be described simply with the word “queer”.
Agender: someone who does not have or identify with any gender.
Genderfluid: a person whose gender identity is fluid. This could be fluidity between 2 genders, more than 2, or all of them!
Genderflux: a gender that fluctuates in intensity. For example, a person who is girlflux might go from agender, to partially a woman, to fully a woman.
Bigender: a person who identifies with two genders. Sometimes the person identifies with both genders simultaneously, and sometimes they are fluid between those genders.
Trigender: a person who identifies with three genders, whether simultaneously or fluidly.
Polygender: a person who identifies with many gender identities, whether simultaneously or fluidly.
Pangender: a person who identifies with all genders that apply to them, whether simultaneously or fluidly. “All that apply” basically refers to genders that a person can’t identify with due to one factor or another, such as a white person not identifying with the label two-spirit since that is an indigenous term.
Neutrois: a neutral gender.
Gendervoid: someone who feels that there is a void where their gender was supposed to be.
Demigender: someone whose gender is partially one gender and partially another. There are many forms of demigender, such as demigirl, demiboy, deminonbinary, etc.
Two-spirit: this label may only be used by indigenous people. Two spirit people have both a masculine and a feminine spirit.
Aporagender: someone who has a gender but it is neither masculine, nor feminine, nor anywhere in between.
Autigender: this label may only be used by autistic people. It does NOT mean that your gender is autistic! A person who is autigender feels that their gender was influenced by their autism in some way, and/or that their gender and their autism cannot be separated.
Xenogender: a gender that cannot be explained by human understandings of gender. This is often used as an umbrella term.
Genderhoarder: someone who feels that one term cannot be accurately used to describe their gender, so they collect or “hoard” gender labels.
Cassgender: a person who feels that their gender is unimportant.
Gender apathetic: a person who is apathetic toward their own gender.
Pomogender: a label for those whose gender does not fit any traditional labels.
I hope everyone is having a great week, and I hope this helped some of you learn more about nonbinary identities. If I didn’t include your label, that doesn’t mean you aren’t part of the nonbinary community- I just can’t possibly list all of the genders that exist since there are so many!
